I think The Letter became a hit in 1967 or 1968. I remember dancing
to it at my boyfriend's high school prom in 1968, and many times when
I went to my first clubs, that and a funky song called Gimme, Gimme
Good Lovin, which I think was Crazy Elephant.

"The Letter" was a high school song for me too. But I can't remember the
year? Think it was junior, maybe senior? What year did you graduate?
I have never listened to Big Star. I realize that's a big hole in my
musical library, need to fix that someday.
I did buy that orange colored Alex Chilton cd that came out in the '80's,

I seriously doubt that.
I wouldn't think BW would even come close.
You should check out what the record companies paid
and how long they waited for Axl Rose to release
Chinese Democracy. $13 million in production costs
after a 15 year wait, numerous lawsuits, record companies
firing people, etc etc..
